About the project

Wanting a more relaxing game jam, I assembled a group of friends to make a collection of simple mini-games focusing more on a polished small game rather than an ambitious one. During the reveal of the theme, Roots, we met up with an artist named Ian who wanted to join us. We happily accepted, grateful to have an artist on the team! Ian did have one requirement though, we had to work in Unity. Until then, we had all assumed we'd be in Unreal Engine but all agreed the experience would be worth it.

Soon after we began pitching ideas back and forth, trying to find a few minigames we thought would work. Almost immediately, Violet came up with the fully formed concept of Rootin' Around. Everyone loved the idea of a raccoon, or trash panda if you wanna be spicy, rooting through the garbage. The team loved the raccoon so much that it became the main character of every minigame. As it turned out, nearly all Shawnee game jams included a panda of some kind that year. Great minds think alike!

At the time, Violet had limited experience using game engines, so seeing this as a great opportunity to follow someone else's vision I decided to create the game. Violet would create the requirements, documentation, and samples of gameplay and my role would be to build the game based on the documentation.

How it works

The Dumpster

Four simple box colliders make up the dumpster. Elijah Wick made this look pretty!

The Pizza

The pizza would spawn at a random reachable location within the dumpster. Upon spawning, the pizza would see which tiles in the tileset were touching it. Once 80% of the tiles touching it were removed, you win the game!

Violet and I aimed to make a raccoon spin like a drill through the trash for our game, which caused it to move out of the dumpster. Working together with another member of the game jam team, Adam Fahrer, we found out that by limiting the movement to only an x and y-axis vector we could add an impulse to the Rigidbody when moving forward or backward, therefore having the raccoon spin without affecting its z velocity. This led to us having left and right inputs rotating the character.
Continuing with Violet's vision for the game, I added a boost. The boost would both spin the raccoon faster and increase the movement speed. To balance this out, I created a simple stamina bar, which when not in use would slowly replenish. This rounded out our spinny littl' trash panda.

What I learned

Flexability
Working with others often means meeting them where they are. Ian was most comfortable with Unity, so that's what the team did. Through this change, I learned more about developing a game in Unity.
Reach out to other Team memebers
When coming up against a problem, having others to rely on is such a blessing. I appreciate Adam's help, even though I will never hear the end of the spinning raccoon.
Teamwork

Reaching out to work together on this little project made my friendship stronger with Violet. Watching her work was amazing and led to us working together on other small projects!

Clearly set goals

Having clear, concise, and reachable goals led to a much more enjoyable development process. The entire team was much more relaxed and had time to live life during the jam!
